On-shore Power Supply

On-shore Power Supply (OPS) replaces ship-board generated power from diesel auxiliary engines with electricity generated on shore. An electrical connection is made between the vessel and the terminal to provide full operational power during docking periods.

When a ship docks, the auxiliary engine is left running, allowing the ship to operate. While the engine is running, however, diesel fuels are burnt, emitting exhaust gases and noise. OPS is a solution for reducing these pollutions and eliminating air emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), diesel fine particulate matter (DPM), and when using renewable energy also greenhouse gas emissions.

With OPS, ships are able to turn off their engines and receive power by “plugging in” to shore-side electrical power, which greatly reduces the environmental impacts from vessels in ports.

The overall goal of the project is to reduce local air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions by stimulating as many ports, terminal operators and shipping lines worldwide to implement the technology of OPS focus on the ports behind World Ports Climate Declaration.

The detailed goal is to stimulate the further use of OPS by designing and buildning a web based application, which provides practical guidance on OPS, available for all ports. The application should also contain information for other stakeholders such as terminal operators and shipping lines.

Questionnaire on On-shore Power Supply

During the summer 2009 a questionnaire about the current status and future
plans regarding Onshore Power Supply was sent out to the WPCI-ports as
well as other ports. The result will be published within short.
