Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa took the zero-emission cargo container hauler for a spin February 24 and was joined by a host of business officials at an assembly-line ceremony at the Balqon Corp. Harbor City’s factory.

The Port of Los Angeles and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) contributed $527,000 to develop the truck named the Nautilus E30. The development is an initiative of the Port’s Clean Air Action Plan.

The truck was specifically designed for short haul or “drayage” operations and can pull a 60,000-pound cargo container at a top speed of 40 mph with a range of 30 to 60 miles per battery charge.

Mayor Villaraigosa was joined by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners President S. David Freeman and Santa Ana Mayor Miguel A. Pulido, who is a member of the SCAQMD's Governing Board.
